The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a complaint of a low-flying aircraft in the area of Titusville.

After being tipped off about the investigation by area resident Kenneth Hartley, The Herald contacted Arlene Salac, who works in the Public Affairs Office for the FAA’s Eastern Region. Salac confirmed the existence of the investigation, but was unable to release more details, such as the subject or nature of the inquiry, at this time, as it has not been completed yet.

Salac said that more details would be available when the investigation is concluded, which she estimated may take a couple of weeks.

The Herald also reached out to FAA Principal Maintenance Inspector Gary Ankney, who is the investigator on the case, but he was similarly unable to release details.

Hartley said that Ankney was at the Titusville Airport on Aug. 30, and claims that he spoke with three witnesses regarding the reputedly low-flying craft, including Hartley.

Hartley alleged that the plane was spotted flying low over Titusville on the morning of Aug. 16. Purportedly the plane was seen flying below 1,000 feet by one of the witnesses, according to Hartley.

Further, Hartley claimed that there were doubts among the witnesses about whether the plane had its annual inspection and if the pilot had either his or her medical evaluation or biennial flight review that is required for piloting.

Hartley said that he saw the pilot and aircraft which he alleged were involved in the flight while driving up the driveway leading to the airport on Aug. 16, after the flight had reportedly taken place.
