One local girl recently had her dream vacation come true when the Make-A-Wish Foundation sent her and her family on an all-expenses paid trip to Florida that included a visit to Disney World and other area theme parks.

Abigail Brown, 11, has lived in Titusville for the past two years with her mother, Kimberly, and father, Edward. Abigail suffers from a nervous system disorder which has caused compounding health issues, including multiple forms of seizures. However, for a six-day period, from Aug. 14 to Aug. 20, she was able to put all of her worries behind and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime trip to three of the biggest amusement parks in America.

“One of my favorite parts (of the trip) was probably seeing her happy,” Edward Brown told The Herald.

Abigail was referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Pennsylvania and West Virginia branch by her mother. After some brief exchanges of paper work between the organization and Abigail’s doctor, the Abigail, her mother, father and cousin, Kasandra Brown, were sent on their way down to Pittsburgh International Airport in a limo with the words “Abigail got her wish” on the back to begin their trip.

Indeed, even before the vacation began properly, Abigail was being treated to some unique opportunities and experiences. The pilots of the plane the family would take to Florida greeted Abigail when she got on board and allowed her to sit up in the cockpit before take off.

Upon arrival in the Sunshine state, the family was checked into Give Kids the World Village, a resort that gives children with major illnesses and their families cost-free vacations village is something of a theme park onto itself, with story-book like buildings and a gingerbread house restaurant.

Over the next six days, the family would jump from theme park to theme park, visiting all major sections of Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World.

While the Brown’s had to watch what rides Abigail could go on due to her condition, they were given passes that let them skip lines.

However, perhaps the most fun thing, according to the family, was tracking down the various characters that inhabit the parks. Abigail hung out with Goofy, got ice cream from Popeye (while the muscle-bound sailor got himself a can of spinach) and met her favorite princess, Rapunzel.

“Just seeing her face when she saw Rapunzel… it brought tears to my eyes,” Kimberly Brown said.

Many of the characters even came to visit Abigail and her family at Give Kids the World Village personally. The girl now has an autograph book chock-full of signatures from everyone she met on the trip.

“The actors were really extraordinary with her,” Edward Brown said.

While Abigail was feeling a little too shy to speak much about her trip when The Herald interviewed her, she did confirm she had fun watching a sea lion show at Sea World, even if she got splashed a little.

While she’s back in Pennsylvania now, Abigail is still receiving gifts. Through Give the Kids the World Village, she will receive a free birthday cake every year until she is 18 years old.
