Newspapers In Education

What is Newspaper In Education (NIE)?

NIE is an international educational program that began in the 1930’s. Locally the program has been adopted by the Titusville Herald and the Titusville Area School District. Together, promoting newspapers as an educational resource. NIE is a service to education and the community by promoting reading and by providing specific program materials to support educational programs for all grade levels. At no cost to schools, the Titusville Herald delivers print editions to area classrooms on a weekly basis. We also provide support material to teachers who request information on how to use the newspaper in their class. The program is sponsored by local businesses who advertise in The Herald’s annual childrens calendar. These sponsorships help young people gain a better understanding of world events and their community through the pages of the Titusville Herald.

Why NIE?

Newspapers are a new, exciting and fun way to learn. With newspapers, students develop their reading ability, increase social awareness, build character and enrich their civic education, plus much more. Newspapers are fresh, up-to-date and practical. They help bridge the gap between the textbook and the real world. According to the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, studies in schools with at least some NIE programs did 10 percent better (on standardized tests) than students in schools that had no NIE program.

How can you help?

In November/December each year, the Herald produces a children’s calendar. The public has the opportunity to vote for photos to be included in the calendar. You will become a partner with the Titusville Herald in fighting illiteracy and providing the Titusville school district with educational materials, classroom support and educational supplements, all free-of-charge. The penny a vote program, in conjunction with the calendar advertisements, pays for the NIE program for one-year. Please consider helping by voting for a photo in the Herald’s childrens calendar. By partnering with the Titusville Herald, together we can touch the lives and future of so many young minds.
