To help honor the memory of Hannah Wright, the Titusville American Legion wanted to do something special. Legion members and Wright’s family organized a scholarship fund in her name, and awarded six students $500 during a luncheon on Sunday.

Genny Cohen presented the scholarships and talked about her personal connection with Wright, who died in a car accident in September.

“To the recipients today, you embody all that Hannah stood for and tried to accomplish,” Cohen said. “Hannah was a giver. She gave back to the community any way that she could.”

Amber Burchard, Christopher Wig, Emma Sines, Courtney Sopher, Ami Jackson and Alyssa Proper were the honored recipients. Cohen said applicants were selected primarily based off their community service work and a required essay about what volunteering means to them.

According to members of the scholarship committee, made up of Legion members and Wright’s family, the selection process was extremely difficult because of the high quality of the submissions that they received.

“You really just wanted to give money to everyone,” Cohen said. “Narrowing it down to just six recipients was hard for us because they’re all such great kids. I hope that they continue applying for this every year so they can be recognized for all that they do in our community.”

Wright’s parents, Tina and Stephen, said the support from the Legion was greatly appreciated and a testament to their daughter’s life.

“We’re really blown away by the outpouring of support that we have received,” Stephen said. “The Legion has done so much for us and we really appreciate it. We really want to keep this going to keep the memory of our angel alive.”

Stephen said he and his wife plan on offering the scholarship every year, and that they will hold fundraising events like spaghetti dinners and sub sales throughout the year to fund it.

“We just want to thank everyone in the whole community for what they’ve done for our family,” Tina said. “Community service was important to Hannah, and this scholarship is a testament to who she was as a person. We were happy to be involved in the selection process and recognizing all these great kids.”

Cohen said she plans on being heavily involved with in keeping the scholarship funded each year. She said Wright’s personality was infectious from the time she first met her when she was in first grade.

“She had one of those smiles that ran from ear to ear,” Cohen said. “She was the type of kid who never misbehaved and always did what she was told. Hannah was so eager to learn and would just brighten your whole day when you would run into her.”

Cohen said that anyone who would like to donate to the scholarship fund could contact her or stop by the Legion at 113 East Central Ave.

Dozens of other area students were honored at the luncheon as well, receiving scholarship money for their academics and commitment to serving the surrounding community. The Legion sponsors these general scholarships each year for students from both Titusville and Maplewood high schools.
