Brock Covell

Titusville’s Brock Covell (right) took second place in the 152-pound bracket on Saturday at the Section 2 Tournament at Greenville High School.

GREENVILLE — With the restrictions on the number of participants in this year’s District 10 wrestling postseason, the Titusville Rockets wrestling team was only able to advance one member of the Brown and Gold into this season’s District 10 Class 2A Tournament.

On Saturday, eight Rockets took to the mat in Greenville for the D-10 2A Section 2 Tournament. Brock Covell’s second-place medal in the 152-pound weight bracket was the lone Titusville first- or second-place finish, which was the requirement to advance to this season’s D-10 Tournament in Sharon.

Titusville scored 65.5 team points, which was good enough for fifth place out of the seven teams that competed. Reynolds won the team championship by having a tournament-high five first-place medalists and finishing 38.5 points ahead of second-place Greenville. Conneaut Area finished in third overall with four gold medalists.

Covell was the top seed coming into the 152-pound bracket, and advanced to the first-place bout with a third-period pin of Greenville’s Caleb Springer. In the first-place bout, Covell battled against Conneaut Area’s Collin Hearn in a rematch of a one-point decision a few days prior in Linesville. Unfortunately for Covell, Hearn repeated his success with a 3-0 decision, which forced Covell to compete for his season in the true-second-place bout against Lakeview’s Danick Hinkson. Like he did earlier in the season, Covell pinned Hinkson, but this time one period sooner to advance to districts.

Trent Rodgers (113) also got to the championship bout in his bracket. After earning a bye through the quarterfinals, the No. 2 seed pinned Greenville’s Seth Renwick in the third period to get to the title bout. Rodgers faced off against Conneaut Area’s Kyle Lantz, who just knocked off top-seeded Chase Bell, of Reynolds, with a 6-3 decision in their semifinal. Lantz earned the section championship as the No. 5 seed by handing Rodgers a 7-5 defeat. In the true-second bout, Rodgers suffered another two-point loss to Bell this season, who claimed silver with a 2-0 decision.

Joining Rodgers with a third-place medal was Nate Stearns at 138. Stearns quickly pinned Lakeview’s Nate Martin to get to the semifinal round, but was turned back to the consolations after an 8-6 loss to Greenville’s Luke Gentile. Stearns worked his way back through the consolation bracket with a technical fall of Franklin’s Logan Gavin and a 9-3 victory in the third-place bout over Reynolds’ Dreyvin Livingston, who pinned Stearns a week prior in the D-10 Team Semifinal Round. Sadly, Stearns did not have a chance to fight in a potential true-second bout, as Gentile was upset by Commodore Perry’s Ashton Armagost in the championship bout.

Hayden Warner (145) and Sebastian Titus (215) rounded out Titusville’s medalists, as both wrestlers placed fourth in their respective brackets. Titus edged out No. 2 seed Anthony Gentile, of Greenville, 3-2 in the consolation semifinals to avenge a prior loss via pin in the regular season, but Titus fell in the third-place bout to Lakeview’s Isaac DeVault. Warner picked up a 7-5 decision over Cael Ziegler in the quarterfinals before being sent to the wrestlebacks. Warner then pinned Commodore Perry’s Kolton Heeter before succumbing to Lakeview’s Ryan O’Polka in the bronze medal bout.

Landen Wolfkiel (126), Kaleb Brunst (160) and Lodge Nosko (285) also competed for the Rockets.

The District 10 Class 2A Quarterfinals are scheduled to begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Sharon. Covell is set to face Fort LeBoeuf’s Jack Rimpa, which would be the first meeting in varsity competition between the two. Like in the section tournament, only the top two in each weight class will advance to regionals.
